The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a super-computing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation, and we are building it from the ground up.
About the project:
ESS is participating the EU Funded project ‘Innovate for Sustainable Accelerating Systems’ (iSAS). The project aims to develop and integrate energy-efficient technologies into superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) accelerating systems. This initiative seeks to enhance the sustainability of particle accelerators, contributing to Europe's Green Deal and maintaining its leadership in fundamental science. We are seeking a motivated Junior Scientist or Engineer to join ESS linac group and contribute to the iSAS project, focusing on the integration of energy-saving technologies into our linac cryomodules. If you are chosen for this exciting role, you will:
This is a grant funded position for a fixed-term period of 2 years. The role is based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden in collaboration with our partners from the iSAS project.
About you:
To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you need to have a master’s degree in physics, engineering, or a closely related field. Experience in accelerator technology, cryomodule design, mechanical design or related areas would be advantageous. Familiarity with energy-efficient technologies and sustainable engineering practices is also beneficial.
In addition to this, you must possess strong analytical and problem-solving abilities as well as demonstrable proficiency in design and simulation software. The working language of ESS is English, and we need someone who can start as soon as possible. Knowledge of other European languages is always beneficial.
To thrive at ESS, you need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as these are vital for effective collaboration with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff within a multidisciplinary team. We are looking for a highly analytical and detail-oriented individual who enjoys critically evaluating information to make data-driven decisions. You can balance theoretical concepts with practical applications and have a sharp eye for identifying potential limitations or errors. As a natural problem solver, you love to generate creative, inventive ideas and explore new perspectives. Others describe you as energetic and proactive, as you work best in a fast-paced environment with plenty to do and are always ready to take on new challenges.
