Give your career a new dimension

Context

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for scientific research using neutrons. Every year, we host over 2000 visits by scientists who come to the Institute to carry out world-class research.

This project addresses critical scientific and technological challenges in hydrogen storage, a cornerstone of future clean energy technologies, and contributes to the development of advanced experimental methodologies under extreme conditions. This project aims to enhance our understanding of hydrogen and binary hydrates' structural stability, hydrogen uptake, and phase transitions under high-pressure conditions, which are key to realising their potential as a sustainable energy storage solution. The use of high pressures is useful both to promote new hydrogen dense phases and to probe hydrogen-water interaction over a large domain of densities, providing a benchmark for building data-derived force fields.

Your tasks:

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will focus on advancing the understanding of hydrogen hydrates under extreme pressure conditions (up to 100 GPa) using state-of-the-art experimental techniques and developing new high-pressure techniques for neutron scattering.

The main objectives include:

1. Energy applications:

  • Investigate structural stability, formation kinetics, and hydrogen uptake of hydrogen hydrates including binary systems, such as hydrogen-helium/-nitrogen, for hydrogen storage applications, with a focus on high-density hydrogen configurations.

2. Methodological development:

  • Pioneer the application of quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to unprecedented pressure conditions by incorporating nano-polycrystalline diamond anvils.
  • Combine neutron and X-ray diffraction, neutron and light spectroscopy for comprehensive studies of hydrate structures and their interaction with guest molecules.

3. Responsibilities:

  • Design and perform high-pressure neutron experiments using advanced equipment, including Paris-Edinburgh cells and neutron diamond anvil cells.
  • Develop and refine QENS and INS methodologies for high-pressure studies.
  • Synthesise and prepare polycrystalline hydrogen hydrate samples, including deuterated forms.
  • Collaborate with leading synchrotron and neutron facilities to execute cutting-edge experiments.
  • Analyse and interpret experimental data for high-impact publications and presentations.

Your profile:

  • PhD or equivalent in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field with experience in high-pressure experimental techniques.
  • Expertise in neutron or X-ray scattering, and familiarity with spectroscopy methods such as Raman or IR.
  • Knowledge of gas hydrates, hydrogen storage, or nanoporous systems is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

What we offer:

Quality of life - A hub for research and technology, the city of Grenoble is ideally located in the heart of the French Alps (just 3 hours from Paris/Provence by train, 1 hour from Lyon international airport and 1 ½ hours from Geneva). It is important for us that our staff achieve a healthy work-life balance. We therefore offer home working (under certain conditions), generous annual paid leave entitlement and a host of other benefits that you will discover when you arrive!

Prospects - We guarantee you a secure 2-year post-doctoral contract, renewable for another one year period. Only candidates holding a PhD obtained within the last 3 years are eligible for post-doctoral positions at ILL.

Benefits - We offer generous social benefits (expatriation allowance, excellent health cover), moving and relocation assistance (under certain conditions) and an annual productivity bonus. We also offer language courses for you and your partner and subsidies for the use of public transport and the staff canteen, as well as for holidays and a variety of cultural and sports activities.

Sounds interesting?

Then why not take your next career step with us by applying online - preferably in English - via our career portal by 23.02.2025, quoting reference number 25/08. with a list of publications and the names of 3 referees, including one from your present work place. Please note that all applicants are subject to administrative screening (background checks). For this post, medical fitness for work under ionising radiation is required. We are committed to equal opportunities and diversity and therefore welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is based in Grenoble (France) and operates Europe's leading

research facility for basic research with neutrons. United by our passion for progress and

technology, we drive science and research forward every day. Together, we can pave the
