Batteries are one of, if not the most, critical component in the new fully electric vehicles and will affect the performance, durability and lifespan of our products.

The lifetime requirements for the battery in a commercial battery-electric vehicle (BEV) are considerably tougher than a corresponding passenger vehicle, as the former is generally expected to drive a much larger distance over its lifetime. It is important then for Scania to build up a very high level of competence and understanding in how Li-ion batteries age, to diagnose failure, improve the design of the battery system, improve battery management, and improve models which can predict remaining useful life.

TRATON Materials Technology has the ambition to build world-class competence in battery materials and degradation processes as well as contribute to the internationally recognised battery research community in Sweden. Through this industrial PhD project we aim to work together with KTH to develop the competence to determine the degree of aging and remaining useful life within battery cells, and develop state-of-the-art electrochemical and material analysis methods to improve quality and throughput.

You will be part of a battery team within Materials technology R&D but also be part of battery development. Materials technology within TRATON consist of approximately 150 material specialist. Our task is to supply Scania with technical expertise on materials for electrification.

Job Responsibilities

Assessment and evaluation of automotive cells for use in second-life applications. Over the usage time of the vehicle, the state of health (SOH) of the lithium-ion cells degrades, reducing the power available to the vehicle, as well as its range.

Upcoming legislation will make vehicle manufacturers such as Scania responsible for the collection and disposal of the cells that are used in their vehicles. Current options for disposal for automotive cells are recycling to recover materials from the cell, or further use in another application, known as second life.

The industrial Ph.D. will aim to develop an assessment method that can rapidly determine the suitability of modules for second-life use based on electrochemical techniques. Coordination with potential customers for second-life modules to determine the application and use for second-life batteries as well as understanding of the cycling and environmental conditions will be necessary.

The successful candidate for this position will work primarily at Materials Technology with a focus on cell teardown and post-mortem analysis methods. In particular, the candidate will:

  • Liaise with second life battery end-users to determine the requirements and regulations for batteries needed for their applications.
  • Investigate methods of determining the degree and causes of ageing within battery cells and modules using electrochemical analysis methods, post-mortem cell analysis and previous cycling data.
  • Investigate methods of rapidly determining the remaining useful life of a battery cell and module to evaluate a cell for second life use.
  • Participate in the development of Materials Technology’s battery chemistry laboratory.

The successful candidate will be employed full-time by Traton, splitting their time between Traton and the Department of Chemistry KTH University. At KTH, the candidate will participate in courses, and conduct research under the supervision of Professor Rakel Wreland Lindström, who has many years of experience in the fundamental analysis of battery degradation mechanisms.

Who You Are

The successful candidate should have a Masters degree in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related field. The candidate should have a demonstrated record of strong analytical skills, be well-organised and able to independently plan and execute tasks. The candidate should have good communication skills, both in written and spoken English.

Meritorious:

  • Knowledge and experience working with batteries and/or energy storage technologies
  • Knowledge and experience of electrochemistry and relevant chemical analysis methods
  • Knowledge and experience of software languages such as Python, Matlab, R, Julia
  • Good communication skills, both in written and spoken Swedish

Characteristics such as initiative and good cooperation skills are necessary. You are dedicated, curious, interested and driven to develop new ideas and deliver results. You thrive working in teams and are inspired by a creative climate surrounded by highly competent colleagues. You are customer oriented and outwardly can represent Materials Technology internally at Scania and externally towards universities, institutes and companies in project collaborations.

Application

Your application should include a CV and any relevant certificates. We welcome all applicants and strive for diversity in our recruitment processes.

Apply as soon as possible, no later than 2025-04-25. Screening will take place on an ongoing basis during the application period. Logical and personality tests may be used as part of the selection process, and a background check may be required for this role.
